SERP Overlap Tool
This tool analyses the search result pages (SERPs) of two different keywords, calculates the overlap and relevance score and provides valuable insights to optimize your SEO strategy. The overlap score shows how many URLs match in the search results of both keywords, while the relevance score takes into account the position of these matching URLs in the search results.
What is a SERP Overlap Tool?
The tool analyzes the search result pages (SERPs) of two different keywords and thus provides insights into whether and to what extent the search results for both keywords overlap.
The aim is to refine your SEO strategy by identifying which two keywords should be treated on separate landing pages in a competitive comparison and which should be combined on one page.
How can the SERP Overlap Tool help you?
The SERP Overlap Tool can help you refine your SEO strategy. By identifying the overlap between two keywords, you can gain insight into the content strategy of your competitors in the SERPs. Are certain keywords and topics treated together on one page or are there individual pages whose structure differs significantly from one another?
The overlap tool saves you from having to analyze the SERPs manually and allows you to see at a glance which search results rank in the top 10 positions for the respective keywords. This gives you the opportunity to tailor your pages ideally to users’ search queries.
Keep in mind, however, that the SERP Overlap Tool alone is not enough to optimize your website. It only tells you whether two keywords are compatible with each other according to the search engine. Factors such as search volume, content structure, technical structure and many other factors have a significant influence on SEO performance and should always be taken into account when developing an SEO strategy. As SEO experts, we are happy to support you in creating and implementing a holistic SEO strategy – whether on-page or off-page.

What does the overlap score mean?
The overlap score shows how many URLs match in the search results for both keywords. The more websites that deal with both keywords on one page, the higher the overlap.
An identical URL in the top 10 search results for keyword A and keyword B means an overlap score of 10%. With two overlaps, it would be 20 % and so on.
In order to increase the significance of the SERP overlap tool, the relevance score must also be taken into account, as the overlap score does not take into account the position of the overlapping SERPs, but only the number of overlaps.
What does the relevance score mean?
In addition to the overlap score, the relevance score also takes into account the position of the overlaps in the SERPs. The higher the position of the overlapping search results, the higher the matches are weighted.
Position 1 has a weight of 10, position 2 a weight of 9 down to position 10 with a weight of 1.
Examples:
1 match and overlap score of 10 %:
Position in result list-1: 8th place (weight = 3)
Position in results list-2: 3rd place (weight = 8)
Match score = 3 + 8 = 11 % Relevance score
2 matches and overlap score of 20 %:
Position in results list-1: 8th place (weight = 3)
Position in result list-2: 3rd place (weight = 8)
Match score = 3 + 8 = 11
Position in results list-1: 3rd place (weight = 8)
Position in results list-2: 1st place (weight = 10)
Agreement value = 8 + 10 = 18
11 + 18 = 29 % Relevance score
Caution: Please note that the relevance scores are converted to a scale of 0 – 100 %, as the relevance score would exceed 100 % according to the above calculation with 100 % overlap.
